Diabetic feet
Diabetic feet
Your feet are an important part of your daily life, but they are also often a neglected part of the body. We don't think to inspect our feet daily for cuts, scrapes or blisters. It's usually once something has already developed and is painful, that we take any action. But what if you don't feel pain in your feet? This is an issue many people living with diabetes will face.
Foot care is especially important if you have diabetes. Diabetes can reduce blood flow to your feet and cause nerve damage. Without proper attention and care, a small injury can develop into an open sore that can be difficult to treat. Sometimes amputation is necessary if an infection severely damages the tissue and bone.
The good news is that with proper diabetes management and visiting your Chiropodist regularly for evaluations, amputation may be preventable.
Why does diabetes pose a risk of amputation?
Diabetes can cause two potentially dangerous threats to your feet.
Nerve Damage (diabetic neuropathy)
When the nerves in your feet are damaged the feeling of pain in your feet is reduced. Because of this, you can develop a blister or cut your foot without realizing it. If you don't realize it, that blister or cut can develop into a serious infection.
Reduced blood flow
Diabetes can also narrow your arteries, reducing blood flow to your feet. With less blood in your feet, it's harder for sores to heal. An unnoticed cut or sore hidden beneath your socks and shoes can quickly develop into a larger problem.
